I can't visit Ree's website without gaining a virtual pound or two, and I always leave wanting to go bake something, which I'm going to do this afternoon. I'm going to make one of Mom's recipes––her Chocolate/Chocolate Chip Cake. Delicious! Here's the recipe in Mom's own handwriting (click on the images to make them larger).
It's hard to believe, but it was a year ago today that Mom went Home. In one sense, it's been a very long year of missing her, adjusting to life with the reality of her absence. But then again, in another sense, it feels like she just left us...when I remember how we were waiting at the oncologist's office and I left to go to the bathroom only to come back and find her and Dad sharing my iPod, one earbud each. We got so tickled...
I'm so glad the Bible tells us that there will be feasting in Heaven. Because I'm pretty sure Mom will be making her Chocolate/Chocolate Chip Cake there too, along with her Pecan Tassies, and her fresh Coconut Cake, and her Sour Cream Pound Cake. She was a big cake fan and instilled within me her love for baking. So...
After a morning of writing, I'll be donning the apron and will be remembering Mom today in a way that I think would make her smile. In fact, I know it would.
Tammy

Here's the finished product, friends. Wish you were here to share!

Gah!! Posts like this make me hungry!
ReplyDeleteAnd they make me want to eat bad stuff. And they make me want to bake! (Baking in this house is no good. There's no one I can feed it to and either I eat too much and gain more weight or everybody eats it then complains how its not good for them. lol One of these days I'm going to figure out how to bake something and take most of it away. . .somewhere. . .where someone can enjoy it. I need someone to feed!)
I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. That must be hard. Even if you know you'll see her in heaven, its not easy to be without someone you love. But hopefully it makes it easier knowing she's there and probably doing something she loves to do.
Did you know you could also ask God to pass messages to them for you? Obviously, I cannot say for certain sure that he actually *does*, but I've never heard that he won't either. I find it comforting to ask him to please tell her that...well, whatever I want to pass on. Usually, its just 'please tell her that I love her and am thinking about her.' I have refrained from asking Him to tell anyone that I miss them. Somehow that seems more selfish and unhelpful to either of us. But passing on love and remembrance is comforting. At least to me. I guess I have to wait and find out if it did any good up there. :)
I also heard tell (somewhere or another?) that time does not pass in Heaven the way it does here. Sort of makes sense, I guess, since time was created for us here. But its nice to think that however much we might miss them here. . .they aren't really missing us there because it hasn't seemed like all that long to them. To them, we'll meet them again shortly after they arrive. Or something like that anyway. Its weird trying to think without time.
Just some thoughts I hope you find comforting in some way.
Oh Tammy!
ReplyDeleteI am putting on weight just by looking at your Mum's recipe and I can almost smell the delicious aroma coming from your kitchen...grooo...aaann! Wish you lived a little closer to us!
I well remember my Grandmother's chocolate cake recipe.
We used to have "high tea," every Sunday evening and our table was laden with all sorts of "goodies" and always the choccy cake! Not sure what the dieticians of today would think, but oh my, it was sooo..ooo good!
I don' t think you will ever be without your Mum, I am sure she will be right there in your kitchen saying "Carry on the good work Tammy!"
Cheers till next time.
Rosie.
Your mom's recipe looks delicious, thank you so much for sharing it! I think you've got to be making her smile today, to remember her in such a way. :) And I LOVE The Pioneer Woman...the Black Heels to Tractor Wheels book is getting released in February, I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteHey Tammy!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your post today! Has it been a year? I agree with you, on one hand it seems a long time ago and on the other it seems like yesterday. Long probably because of the what I call "the walking it out" part of the journey; but short because God in His grace by the Holy Spirit brings to our minds and hearts all the precious moments we spent with our loved ones. I never met your mom of course, but I just know that she was a sweet, sweet woman and fun to be around. My mom was too...such a dear, dear woman. And boy could she cook! She loved trying new recipes;her yellow squash casserole and Sour Cream pound cake were my two most favorites!
And @ Elentarien, if we can send messages through God to our loved ones I would like to tell our Moms that we are keeping the legacy by sharing the love they instilled in us AND by baking or cooking one of their recipes every now and then. (smile)Have a blessed day Tam, know that you are in my prayers and thoughts. Will print your Mom's recipe and try it out on my Grandkids whenever I visit with them. Thanks...and thanks for being you...your mother's daughter.
Amazed by His Grace,
Veronica
Dear Tammy,
ReplyDeleteYou have such amazing memories with your mom and that is truly a treasure that neither moth nor rust doth corrupt. And as much as it hurts, we would never trade all the pain and heartache for the beloved memories. Your mom had such a shine about her, the pictures you've shared of her just glow with beauty, love and joy even in the face of such illness. My dear Auntie Ellie was like that, too. This past Friday was 11yrs. since she passed away from breast cancer. No matter how much time passes memories are still vivid, hearts still break and tears still fall over the loss of our precious loved ones. But our hope is in heaven and our peace is in His promise that our morning of joy cometh quickly!
And I just love your moms sound advice on not to use Devil's Food cake mix, LOL! And it's so cute how she writes out her recipes, too- my mom and nana do the same thing with all the underlining and adjectives :D
My friend, you and your family are in my thought and prayers today. May you find perfect peace and joyous strength under the shadow of the Almighty.
"There are souls in this world which have the gift of finding joy everywhere and of leaving is behind them when they go." ~Fredrick W. Faber
Prayers & Blessings,

YUM! Your Mom's cake recipe sounds delicious, and how special to have that recipe in her own handwriting. I love looking through some of my Mama's old cookbooks and seeing where she added notes on the side---just another way she stays "with me" here on earth! I can imagine our Moms visiting in Heaven (and sharing recipes---since they were both wonderful cooks!) and what a comfort knowing WE will be there with them one day. ~ Cannot believe it's been an entire year since your Mom made the journey, but I feel certain she's smiling down on you. Love, Patti Jo
ReplyDeleteBless you gals, for your posts. Heaven's going to be beyond our imagination! I love what the Word says in Psalm 16:11, "You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever." Oh for that day...
ReplyDeleteBut until then, I'm grateful we're traveling this road together. And now...off to make my cake! Wish I could have you all over for a piece.
Mmm, yummy! Your mom's recipe sound scrumptious. Wish I could come over for a piece too. But I need to watch my weight. :) Sure they're going to turn out delicious, and after a morning of writing, you deserve the little treat.
ReplyDeleteI know heaven's going to full of feasts and no worries about calories or gaining weight. Pure bliss!
Tamera,
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I don't live THAT far away...we'll just swing by...once we find out where you live :P
Seriously, though, it's hard to believe it's been a year. I pray God continues to comfort you and your family. I'm praying for ya'll!
LOL, Catherine. Saving you a piece! And hey, how did your move go? Well, I hope.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this recipe! Also thanks for sharing the meaningful memories of your mom. The memories are a special thing you'll always have with you. My mom passed away in 2000, and she was like my best friend. God bless!
ReplyDeleteBless you, Rhonda, and here's to the day we'll see our sweet moms again.
ReplyDeleteThe move went well, thank you :) We're still trying to settle in (quite a few boxes to unpack still), and God took care of us during the move, bringing people to help when almost everyone backed out at the last minute. We've only been here a few weeks, but it was home from the moment we stepped in :)
ReplyDeleteTam! What ARE you trying to DO to us girl! THAT CAKE looks absolutely scrumptious! I am telling you right now that if I lived next door to you, I would be a nuisance. 'Cause every time you would start baking, I would have an excuse to make a visit! LOL
ReplyDeleteWhen I make your Mom's recipe for the Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cake I am going to post a picture and then it will be YOUR turn to salivate! LOL Love Ya!
I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I hope that the food provides some small comfort. I know I love to cook and to think about my Dad's recipes since he passed on brings me a lot of comfort. How special to have the written notes, too. I hope you are able to cherish the memories and though they may not take the sadness away bring a richness to you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post, Tammy. I know how much you miss your dear, sweet mama. What a lovely way to remember her on this day. We'll have to try the recipe. Thanks for sharing. Hugs to you from Kansas.
